Town and community councils could be allowed to step in and save some of the public toilets across Gwynedd, Wales, that are currently targeted for closure under the council’s cost-cutting plans, a recent news report has been able to suggest.
Gwynedd Council was forced to tackle a £5.5 million shortfall after receiving a cut in its funding from the Welsh Government and, as a result, the authority carried out a huge public consultation involving 2,000 residents and organisations late last year on a range of possible service cuts it would have to make thanks to the budget shortfall for 2016/17.
The consultation included a proposal that the council stops maintaining 50 out of a total of 73 public toilets in the future and, in March this year, councillors approved the public toilet proposal as part of a series of cuts.
A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: "The council has made clear that its preferred option would always be to avoid closures wherever possible.
"Because of this, detailed work has been carried out since March to establish whether there are any alternative options to fund and keep open public toilets facilities that will otherwise have to be closed by April 2017."
