Thirsk Town Council, which has taken on responsibility for public toilets in a town heavily visited by tourists has raised £1,768 towards their maintenance through donations and advertising.

According to a news report on the matter, the authority has revamped the toilets since taking them on from Hambleton District Council last year, acknowledging the major role they play for the busy tourist destination.

And, in fact, they hope that tourist donations will contribute significantly to the cost of running the toilets, one of the councillors going as far as giving out 57 letters to coach drivers asking them to mention the toilet facilities and for donations from tourists.

Advertising signs in the toilet block raised £765 from March to September and the council also installed an honesty box in the block in an attempt to get visitors to contribute towards their operation and maintenance.

While such an initiative is obviously an interesting and useful one, implementing an access restriction system and charging for access might be something the council should take into account, on the long-term, and this is exactly where Toilet Turnstiles could really puts its experience to good work.

Our toilet turnstiles are built from graded stainless steel, for easier cleaning and maintenance, and also come equipped with lockable lids to prevent unwanted access. Furthermore, the separate coin box offers very versatile mounting options, as it can be installed either in front of the turnstile, at the side or alternatively, on the wall, with the cash box at the rear.

The turnstile’s coin mechanism can be programmed for virtually any combination of coins with a secure cash box to hold them, while the additional counters for the number of entries made will enable a thorough level of control over the system’s operation.
