The British Toilet Association has called for public toilets to become a human right enshrined in law, as the number of public toilets that have closed over the past few years have reached cataclysmic proportions, and it is feared that all those under review could also ending up going down the pan.
The group says accessible free toilets are vital to our everyday lives, while being a necessity for people with accessibility needs and parents with young children.
A spokesman for the Use Our Loos campaign run by the BTA said: “Public toilets are an essential piece of infrastructure for all types of users as they fulfil a significant role in our health and ongoing well-being. If we can’t dispel the poisons building up inside our guts then we run the risk of falling sick or ill during our working day or when driving.
Public toilet provision in the UK has been declining for a number of years. The British Toilet Association estimates that 40 per cent of public washrooms have disappeared in the past decade. UK councils stopped maintaining around 13 per cent of all public toilets between 2010 and 2018 and there are believed to be 37 areas across the UK where there are no council-run washroom facilities whatsoever.
Charging a fee for access is quite often the most sensible solution when it comes to public toilets’ funding – and indeed keeping these facilities open for the general public, and this is exactly where Toilet Turnstiles could really put its experience to good work.
