Although public toilets across the UK seem to be an endangered species, with more and more such public conveniences being shut down over the past few months due to budget cuts, there are also a few exceptions to be found, here and there, and that’s also the case with Woodley, in Wokingham, Berkshire.
According to a news report on the matter, after a long and tireless campaign, council leaders have decided to vote for developer contributions to fund new toilets.
This comes after shoppers in the precinct have been encouraged to use loos in shops and community centres since the controversial Local Loo scheme was introduced in 2009. The move was not popular in Woodley with complaints highlighting on convenience and publicity and a 1,600-signature petition was brought to the borough council last year.
However, a report put to Wokingham Borough Council’s executive claimed the “scheme has provided better public toilet facilities at lower cost and has eliminated the issues of vandalism and anti-social behaviour that were experienced previously”.
Of course, it remains to be seen whether the council will actually manage to rack up the necessary funds in order to achieve this feat, but one method of curbing the costs associated to running the toilets is charging a small access fee, and this is exactly where Toilet Turnstiles could really come in handy.
