It seems that, while more and more cash-strapped borough councils close their public toilets in order to save money for other services, numerous town councils decide to step in and do what’s best for their citizens, be re-opening the aforementioned facilities.
That was also the case in Ripley, Derbyshire, where the toilets, set in the town’s market place, have been reinstated by the town council after the borough council closed all public toilets across the region.
As a report in the local media reveals, Steve Freeborn, leader of the town council, said the closure had caused a lot of "angst" in Ripley and that, although the town expressed their interest in keeping the facilities open ever since the borough council revealed closure plans, "it took about six months for them to sort out the lease but we’ve finally opened them and sorted it."
Although three local businesses were involved in a Community Toilet Scheme, which means that they received £600 in order to open their toilets to the public, Mr Freeborn said that: "Quite a lot of residents said they were unable to use other facilities in the town which don’t have disabled access and some people didn’t want to go into pubs to use those toilets."
