The closure of around 40% of the UK’s public toilets might actually have some negative effects on people’s health, and even increase the risks of strokes and heart attacks, multiple health experts claim.

According to a media report on this topic, Dr Clare Walton, of the Stroke Association, said: ‘Not being able to empty your bladder may cause a temporary increase in blood pressure which could put some at risk of stroke.’

And the worst hit by the wave of public toilet closures are the elderly. Michelle Mitchell, Age UK’s Charity Director General, said: ‘Public toilets are vital to many older people, enabling them to get out and about to access essential services. Worrying about being caught short or facing the indignity of having an accident in public can have a devastating impact on people in later life, resulting in many feeling increasingly stuck at home and cut off from the rest of society.’

Given the nature of these findings, it’s becoming quite clear that local authorities should do everything in their power in order to keep these public conveniences open. And although actual funding is scarce, one method of curbing the costs associated to running the toilets is charging a small access fee, and this is exactly where Toilet Turnstiles could really come in handy.

Our toilet turnstiles are built from graded stainless steel, for easier cleaning and maintenance, and also comes equipped with lockable lids to prevent unwanted access. Furthermore, the separate coin box offers very versatile mounting options, as it can be installed either in front of the turnstile, at the side or alternatively, on the wall, with the cash box at the rear.

The turnstile’s coin mechanism can be programmed for virtually any combination of coins with a secure cash box to hold them, while the additional counters for the number of entries made will enable a thorough level of control over the system’s operation.
