A public toilet in Dorking has been shut for almost eight months now after the facility caught fire in what is believed to be a deliberate attack on March 14 and is still yet to be reopened, a recent news report in the local media has been able to reveal.
The president of the local chamber of commerce told the local newspaper that frustration is growing over the lack of any action from Mole Valley District Council, which owns the toilet.
And with many of the town’s most popular events coming up – including the Christmas lights switch-on later this month and Gala Night in December – concerns are rising that demand for the facility is only likely to increase.
The district council’s executive member for the environment Paul Newman confirmed the toilet was vandalised in March and that it was subject to an "arson attack".
He added: "The police were notified, but unfortunately those responsible have not been traced.
"Mole Valley District Council is working with insurers to have the toilet reinstated. We expect the facility to be re-opened in early 2016. Waitrose on South Street have kindly offered use of their customer toilets to the public, until the works are completed by our contractors."
