A local council has decided to start charging patrons for access to two of its public toilets in an attempt to partially cover maintenance costs, a recent news report has been able to suggest.

A 20p charge will be imposed at two public toilets in Newark after town councillors agreed to introduce coin-operated barriers. Barriers will be added to the facilities at London Road and Tolney Lane at a cost of £23,600 before the end of the year.

Town councillors said the toilets attract high levels of anti-social behaviour, including drug-related incidents, people sleeping there, and verbal abuse and physical threats to staff.

Another set of public toilets in the town already has a coin-operated system and the number of incidents relating to anti-social behaviour is extremely low. Plus, the location brings in more than £5,000 a year in income.

Town councillor Mr Mathew Skinner said he was in favour of the charge and believed it would help improve the quality of the facilities.

He said: “I did raise the point in terms of the technology and suggested a card or contactless system, which the town council said they would look at.

“The changes should help, and the refurbishment will make them better for people living in the town and those who are visiting.”

Charging a fee for access is the most sensible solution when it comes to public toilets’ funding, and this is exactly where Toilet Turnstiles could really put its experience to good work.

Our toilet turnstiles are built from graded stainless steel, for easier cleaning and maintenance, and also come equipped with lockable lids to prevent unwanted access. Furthermore, the separate coin box offers very versatile mounting options, as it can be installed either in front of the turnstile, at the side or alternatively, on the wall, with the cash box at the rear.

The turnstile’s coin mechanism can be programmed for virtually any combination of coins with a secure cash box to hold them, while the additional counters for the number of entries made will enable a thorough level of control over the system’s operation.
