The local council of the Cornish town of Lostwithiel is currently considering paying the local community centre or social club for people to use their toilet facilities at times when they are not normally open, a news report in the local media has revealed.
The public toilets in the town have been shut since Christmas, with no plans laid out regarding their reopening in the near future, so the council was forced to adopt contingency plans, until this important outstanding issue is sorted out.
Cornwall Council offered to spend £23,000 refurbishing the town’s public toilets and then sell them to the town council for £1, but the latter insisted there was a problem with the drainage system of the facilities and Cornwall Council needed to spend considerably more on fixing that before a deal would go through.
The community centre’s toilets are available for the public to use when it is open, and the social club has been allowing anyone to use its facilities, but, unfortunately, neither premises are open throughout the week, prompting the town council to consider paying both to extend their opening hours.
Unfortunately, more often than not, schemes such as the one described above don’t really achieve the desired results.
