A local authority has started to take serious steps to protects its public toilets following a spate of vandalism in recent weeks, a news report in the local media has been able to find.
The Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is working with local police after public toilets in the Dunluce Avenue area of Portrush were targeted by vandals.
Following two incidents of criminal damage over a three week period, Council officers found the toilets to be substantially damaged.
The Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Michelle Knight-McQuillan, said: “I was shocked having been informed of the damage individuals have caused to the public toilets at Dunluce Avenue.
“The damage to the facility on this occasion reaches costs of up to £2,500. This is not only an additional cost to ratepayers, but also impacts on Council’s resources.
“The additional toilets were installed following requests from the public. Unfortunately as the facility has now suffered so much damage in recent weeks Council may have to consider withdrawing the public toilets due to the rising cost of repairs resulting from continuous vandalism.”
