A local authority has decided to keep a block of public toilets safe from traditional seasonal closures due to its unique location and local importance, a recent news report in the local media has been able to find.

Berwick Town Council has agreed to supply the £2,000 required to keep Spittal’s public toilets open this winter after the facility was earmarked for seasonal closure as part of cost-cutting measures proposed by Northumberland County Council.

Councillor Ivor Dixon, who represents Lower Spittal, said: “I don’t want to seem biased but Spittal is unique in that a lot of people still walk along the prom in the winter.

“If they closed these in the winter, where do people go when they’re caught short? For the amount of money it costs, I don’t think it’s that much to keep them open.”

While providing the cash from alternate sources is a good short-term option, charging a fee for access is also something authorities might consider on the long-term, and this is exactly where Toilet Turnstiles could really puts its experience to good work.

Our toilet turnstiles are built from graded stainless steel, for easier cleaning and maintenance, and also come equipped with lockable lids to prevent unwanted access. Furthermore, the separate coin box offers very versatile mounting options, as it can be installed either in front of the turnstile, at the side or alternatively, on the wall, with the cash box at the rear.

The turnstile’s coin mechanism can be programmed for virtually any combination of coins with a secure cash box to hold them, while the additional counters for the number of entries made will enable a thorough level of control over the system’s operation.
