A local authority is considering charging a fee for access to public toilets, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.
The Great Yarmouth Borough Council operates 11 such facilities, both year-round and seasonal, across the borough, and its members are considering the possibility of imposing a fee for their use.
A report to the committee states: "In order to mitigate the ongoing costs associated with repairs and maintenance, income generation opportunities should be considered." It continues: "Moving forward this could support the continued operation of the facilities and ensure standards of refurbishment can be maintained."
It has been recommended the money be spent on sprucing up the seafront toilet at Euston Road in Great Yarmouth, as well as the seasonal facilities at Hemsby, Second Avenue and Beach Road in Caister, Scratby and Winterton.
Until 2016 the borough council managed all of the facilities but after a review in 2016 eight were taken over by parish councils and businesses through management agreements.
Charging a fee for access is quite often the most sensible solution when it comes to public toilets’ funding – and indeed keeping these facilities open for the general public, and this is exactly where Toilet Turnstiles could really put its experience to good work.
Our toilet turnstiles are built from graded stainless steel, for easier cleaning and maintenance, and also come equipped with lockable lids to prevent unwanted access. Furthermore, the separate coin box offers very versatile mounting options, as it can be installed either in front of the turnstile, at the side or alternatively, on the wall, with the cash box at the rear.
The turnstile’s coin mechanism can be programmed for virtually any combination of coins with a secure cash box to hold them, while the additional counters for the number of entries made will enable a thorough level of control over the system’s operation.
