Campaigners protesting against the closure of public toilets in Pangbourne have decided to create a charity in order to ensure that the conveniences remain open after Pangbourne Parish Council withdrew all financial support for the venues, a news report in the local media has been able to suggest.
The Members of Action for Pangbourne Toilets (APT) are in the process of setting up a charity with the aim of re-opening the toilets in Station Road as quickly as possible.
A public meeting was held in the West Berkshire village last week to ask the people, local businesses and neighbouring parish councils for their views on a plan to form a new organisation to pay for and manage the toilets on behalf of the village.
Almost 100 people turned up to the meeting to find out more about West Berkshire Council’s proposal to lease the loos to the group and to pledge their own financial support to the plan.
The group’s members are now optimistic they will be able to re-open the dormant toilets and have set their sights on raising an initial £10,000.
Although setting up a charity for running the public toilets is certainly a noteworthy idea, installing an access restriction system and charging a small fee for access could also help provide a solid revenue stream, and this is exactly where Toilet Turnstiles could really put its experience to good work.
