Residents in the town of Biddulph, Staffordshire, have started a campaign to have a block of shut-down public toilets reopen, a news report in the local media has revealed.
Campaigners are arguing that the elderly and disabled people living in the area where the public used to operate find themselves distraught, not to mention that the closest public toilets are much more difficult to access.
The public toilets block in question was shut down temporarily around 2 years ago, while a new medical centre was built in their vicinity, but while the centre already opened for public half a year ago, the public conveniences remained shut.
Now, residents fear that the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council may move to close the toilets permanently and ask visitors to use the toilets at the town’s bus hub, near the Sainsbury’s supermarket.
Biddulph Town Council understands the toilets would cost around £17,500-a-year to maintain but require work to bring them ‘up to scratch’.
In some specific cases, councils can actually manage to gather the funds required to cover the toilets’ maintenance and operation by installing access restriction solutions and charging a small sum for access.
