A spate of vandalism has forced a local authority to shut its public toilets at night, a recent news report in the local media has been able to suggest.

An estimated £2,265 worth of damage was caused to three public toilets in just 28 days at a cost of around £80 per day.

A month after Boston Borough Council opened three public toilets 24 hours a day in an attempt to crack down on street urination and defecation, they have been forced to scrap the trial at Central Park.

Central Park toilets are now only open during the day, while the others on Lincoln Lane and Cattle Market are still open 24/7 for now.

More than £750 worth of damage was caused on Wednesday, September 11, as the electronic door handle to the toilets was broken along with further damage to the toilet doors and handles.

Aaron Spencer, the leader of the council, said: “I’m deeply saddened that, working alongside Boston Town Area Committee, the decision has been made to cease the trial of the Central Park toilets opening overnight following regular vandalism.

"We offered this facility to the community of Boston with the vision of reducing street urination and defecation, at cost to the local authority, and it’s disappointing to see that a small minority find it acceptable to cause damage to an asset for the community, costing the council hundreds of pounds to repair, and requiring them to be out of service for a significant period.”

Installing a solid access restriction system is certainly the best approach by local authorities when faced with vandalism, and that’s exactly where Toilet Turnstiles could really put its experience to good work.

Our toilet turnstiles are built from graded stainless steel, for easier cleaning and maintenance, and also come equipped with lockable lids to prevent unwanted access. Furthermore, the separate coin box offers very versatile mounting options, as it can be installed either in front of the turnstile, at the side or alternatively, on the wall, with the cash box at the rear.

The turnstile’s coin mechanism can be programmed for virtually any combination of coins with a secure cash box to hold them, while the additional counters for the number of entries made will enable a thorough level of control over the system’s operation.
