A community campaign fighting against the public toilet closures across Anglesey has started to gain some serious traction as five public toilets have already reopened, with support from the public and community organisations.
A total of nine public conveniences were shut down by Anglesey Council at the end of March as the public authority could not afford to fund their operation any longer, a news report in the local media could reveal.
Anglesey Council decided to close a number of toilets in Holyhead, but the port town’s mayor, Cllr John Victor Owen, said he would take responsibility for the running of the toilets at Newry Beach.
“I got in touch with Anglesey Council and agreed to take over the cost of running the toilet – the electricity, sewerage and cleaning it. The town council has taken over the running of the one in Swift Square.
However, Cllr Owen believes that the only way forward is to start charging people for the use of some toilets.
He said: “It’s a sign of the times. That is the trend. I am responsible for keeping it open. It’s very, very popular. It’s a service that is needed.”
